Digital Publishing – Week One

The first week of Digital media we began to look into the world of Digital Publishing with the end goal of making our very own magazine for iPad. In our little groups we went onto the Newsstand app on the university iPads and explored the function and features of various digital publications. One of the more popular examples we viewed was Empire Magazine by Bauer Media, this magazine, all about film and television boasted quite a few interactive features. Various features of the magazine included video which streamed from the internet (a trailer for the most recent Star Trek film), a couple of small polls which users could cast their votes in and some scrollable images and text boxes. I found this magazine to be really quite good due to how easy it was to navigate and use, also the lack of advertisements within the magazine was nice and made good use of all of the available space on the page.

One of the other magazines we viewed had an ad incorporated within the magazine but it had a separate page for itself. The advert was a video which played on a page of it’s own, when you swiped to one of the pages it would come up and you had to watch it. The advert was quite good in itself and was relevant to the magazine.

Our group decided to create a magazine based on film and television as it was the most relevant topic to all of our interests, in the session we planned out our magazine on paper and got a rough layout designed which was similar in essence to Empire Magazine as we felt it had a good intuitive layout which we could potentially replicate.
