Digital Publishing – Week Two

During the second week we began to develop our ideas into an actual product. We chose the name Focus for our magazine as it had a nice ring to it and has connotations to do with film and cameras etc… I began to develop my own pages within the magazine in Adobe InDesign using iPad specifications. My article within the magazine was all about the television show Doctor Who which I thought was quite good since it spans 50 years of history in television (I also am a massive fan which is a plus). I decided in my article I would have a couple of videos which seemed relevant due to it being a magazine on TV and Film, I downloaded a couple of Doctor Who videos from the internet in preparation to attach them to content within the magazine. I acquired some high resolution images of characters from the TV show to place within the pages to make the article more visually interesting. I used the folio builder to make one of my images interactive so that when the end user taps on it, it plays a video. I managed to integrate an mp3 into the cover so that it plays automatically  when you open my article. These were a few different types of interactivity which were integrated into our magazine.

I kept the cover for my article really simple and used the poster for the 50th anniversary of the show as I felt it summed up the show quite well. Within this was an mp3 of the Doctor Who theme which you could stop or start by tapping the image. I embedded a couple of videos within the app relating to the subject matter to make the magazine more interactive, On the final page I created an interactive image slideshow which you could swipe left or right to reveal a new image.

Problems – I couldn’t manage to get access to the DPS tools app outside of university as to be able to integrate more features into my article such as scrollable text. During the actual workshops we were shown video tutorials which seemed to be further along in the process of making the digital publication than we were actually at and I feel that we personally weren’t actually shown anything by the lecturer. I understand that much of the work is to be personal study but it would be good to be at least be shown the basics of what we need to do rather than shown a semi-relevant video tutorial. Also it would be great to have access to the video tutorials outside of class for further work. I feel that the images within the magazine don’t look very good due to the lack of editing on them, I simply used the tools within InDesign to cut around the images and need to take the time to edit them to have much smoother edges and to generally make the magazine more professional looking.
